As a traditional event, 11 colleagues of The JLJ Group took part in 2011 Shanghai International Marathon race on December 4th. Kimi Hao, Account Executive of HROne (JLJ's payroll & HR outsourcing services company) broke the 21 km Half Marathon record of The JLJ Group with 1h43, congratulation! Mark Ray, our Consulting Manager with his team also completed the Half Marathon and the 4.5km Health race.

On Thursday, November 17th, the JLJ Group hosted students from the Catalai China Programme at their offices to discuss doing business in China.

JLJ’s Business Development Manager Andrea Christancho led the discussion, and provided insight into entering the China market, the consulting industry, and how JLJ Group works. Speaking from her personal and professional experiences in Shanghai, the Catalai students were able to gain first-hand insight into doing business in China, and learn about recent developments and predictions for the future.

On November 4, the German Chamber of Commerce and The JLJ Group had invited Mary Rezek to highlight 20 bad habits we acquire at our workplace. Habits that hold people back from progressing up the corporate ladder. She will help you to identify which of these 20 habits apply to you, and how to choose the one or two you should focus on.

For all businesses across the globe, taxes should be a thoroughly discussed subject as it accounts for a considerable portion of corporate operating costs. For individuals, taxes can also be a significant liability with China’s personal income tax rate, which is set to undergo change in September.

In this seminar on September 15th, Timothy Lamb, JLJ's FDI Director, explained the importance of tax regulatory compliance and shared practical insights on the issues faced by Rep. Offices and WFOEs, key China tax policies relevant for foreign enterprises in China, as well as practical tips on ways to minimize tax obligations.

JLJ consulting Manager, Mark Ray, was invited to speak at the 5th APEC Business Incubation Forum, on September 6 - 8, 2011 in Xi'an, China.

With the theme being “Build A Co-incubation Network”, incubator managers, experts, entrepreneurs, service providers, officials and investors from around APEC economies - were invited to share the latest co-incubation theories and practices and to co-launch the APEC Co-incubation Network.

At this event Mr. Ray shared JLJ's China market entry knowledge and explained about the company's services to SMEs in a global network view.

As international business expands into China, trading companies are constantly seeking the optimal financial tools to reduce their risk. Understanding your competitive advantage and the risks associated with open account payment and international factoring can be a determinant of success for MNCs and SMEs alike.

In this breakfast seminar, moderated by The JLJ Group, the participants gained financial tools and tips on how to manage risks and increase benefits for trading companies doing business in China.

The speaker was a JLJ Group client, financial services company specializing in supply chain financing for businesses involved in international and domestic trading, especially small to medium sized companies.

The Private Label Manufacturers Association (PLMA) invited Francesco Duina, JLJ Director for North America, to present at a webinar on success strategies for private label companies wishing to enter the China market, on June 22, 2011.

China’s luxury market was virtually non-existent a decade ago; however China is now the world’s fastest growing luxury goods market in the world, with roughly 11% of the global market share. For foreign companies in China most HR related matters revolve around common issues such as how to hire and fire employees, what social benefits should be paid for Chinese employees and how many days off for holiday employees are entitled to.

JLJ's Senior HR Advisor, Chen Chunjie was invited to clarify many key elements of the labor law in China which managers are unaware of and employees are often uninformed about.

Maine International Trade Day is Maine's premier international business event with more than 250 leading professionals from Maine, New England, and Canada discussing the latest experiences, opportunities, and challenges for international trade.

On May 20th 2011, at this upcoming event which is dedicated to "The World in 2020: Emerging Markets for Growth", JLJ's North America Director, Francesco Duina, will give a presentation about "China Trade & Investment".

On May 19th, 2011 JLJ Partner AJ Hu was invited to speak at an SMU-Cox Business School event for MBA GLP (Global leadership Program) students visit in Shanghai, and present the cultural and technical aspects of Doing Business in China.

On May 13th, the European Chamber, together with the Italian and Spanish Chambers, held its third Business Solutions Clinic. This popular gathering drew in a range of companies looking to meet with expert service providers to speak about specific issues they have.

The JLJ Group took part in this business fair, which provided the opportunity for visitors to engage experts on a range of topics including new ideas, innovations and business opportunities in China, as well as get answers to their general China business questions.

China has surpassed the US in cleantech investing, gained dominance in solar PV manufacturing and is now becoming a leader in producing wind turbines. Moreover, 2010 figures for inbound and outbound M&A deals indicated that China accounted for over 8% of global M&A activity with no signs of a downturn in 2011 (source). However, to varying extents, the Chinese economy remains “unknown territory” to foreigners. Without reliable market analysis, thorough company valuations, and a diligent watch on macroeconomic and policy activity, this market can be wrought with risk.

To develop an intelligent approach Agrion solicited advice from a panel of speakers, including JLJ's Francesco Duina; Asia Centre, Marie-Hélène Schwoob; and Deloitte's Eric Dugelay, who offered their experience and knowledge in assessing the China opportunity as it relates to the thriving renewables market.

Technologico de Monterrey University hosted by Shanghai Fudan University, invited JLJ's Business Development Manager, Andrea Cristancho to present 'Market Entry Strategy' to their international business class, formed by Chinese, American, Mexican and European students.

The presentation, aimed to introduce different investment vehicles and share Andrea’s entrepreneurial experience in China, was well received by business students some of whom were evaluating ways of beginning business ventures where some were already doing business in China.

Liberty International Inc., a Rhode Island logistics provider with worldwide reach, invited Francesco Duina, North America Director for The JLJ Group, to address its client base in a seminar on February 8th 2011. Francesco delivered a presentation titled: "China's Emerging Tier 2 Cities: Opportunities for New England Companies".

The employment of Chinese staff is a fundamental matter that all companies in China need to be familiar with. Examples of such issues are the key elements of a labor contract, how to hire and fire, what social benefits must be paid and how many holidays an employee may take.

This Spanish Chamber of commerce and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in China seminar, presented by Ms. May Bai JLJ'S HR Services Manager, addressed labor compliance issues and gave the guests an opportunity to clarify any HR related issues they are unsure of.

For SMEs, most HR related queries revolve around the key elements of a labour contract, how to hire and fire an employee, what social benefits should be paid, how many holidays employees are entitled to, and many more. This session aims to address labour compliance issues and to give you the opportunity to clarify any HR related issues you are unsure of.

May Bai, JLJ'S HR Services Manager, was invited to join EUCCC, on January 19th 2011, to clarify employment related issues, such as: mandatory benefits; working hours and days; annual leave; sick leave; medical period; maternity leave for female employees; termination; and severance payment.

The Rotary Club of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth in Maine invited Francesco Duina, JLJ Director of North America, to speak and deliver a presentation, titled: "EU - China Relations and their Impact on the U.S".

Representative offices in China are about to face tighter regulations placed by the government, which will begin to take effect in March 2011. The regulations are on the subject of the establishment and operation of representative offices by foreign companies, and will bring in more strict compliance requirements and tougher penalties.

On January 12th 2011, Timothy Lamb, JLJ's FDI Director, was invited to speak at an EUCCC session and provide an update on the new regulations of the Representative Offices in China, and explain how they will impact your business.
